He’s not quite you
His looks are similar
But he isn’t quite you
Dark curly hair feels familiar
Alabaster skin
Your receding chin
But he isn’t quite you
It’s not quite right
It’s lovely, it’s stable
But it isn’t quite right
I never used to want to turn out the light
Or be polite
It isn’t quite right
It’s not quite love
It’s tender and it’s gentle
But it isn’t quite love
He doesn’t know it’s you
That I’m thinking of
It isn’t quite love
It isn’t quite love
In you I had a friend, an ally and a worthy sparring partner
An angel in disguise
But our situations
Precluded our relations
Forced our abdications
He’s not quite you
I never laugh like we used to do
So hard it seemed as though my cheeks would split in two
Our amazing rendezvous
He isn’t you
Our brilliant conversation
Our own way of relating
He’s not quite you
He’s not quite you, now is he
He’s not quite you
He’s not quite you

A cold dark road
On a winter night
The tree bark shimmers
In the sharp moonlight
A slant of moon
Cuts across her face
She slips on a stone
But regains her place
What desperate place
Is she hurrying to?
What debt, what favor
Does she owe, to who?
Who could she owe
This girl alone
On a night like this
When she should be home
The man from Sudan
Opens up the door
Of the small stone cottage
She was there before
He beckons her over
To the fireplace
She takes off her gloves
He touches her face
The lovers embrace
In the fire’s glow
One dark as velvet
One pale as snow
He smoothes her hair
And regards her face
Lays her gently down
And fills her with grace
Elijah, Elijah
It was a cold shining dawn
When they took her man away
The silence was heavy
She remembers it today
She thinks of him often
When the snow starts to fall
On these wintry nights
She remembers it all
She closes her eyes
To see his beautiful face
She cannot capture his image
She’s losing his place
She could never understand
Why they had to interfere
With a man that was so pure
With a love that was so clear
Elijah, Elijah

Home At Last

She sits alone upon a throne of deep and bitter red
The cabernet reminds her that the life she knew is dead
She looks upon the land of emperors and swords
The scenery is breathtaking but all she is is bored
She’s home at last
The girls with painted faces and the boys with feathered hair
Filter laughingly beside her; no one notices or cares
The beauty of the temples and the lushness of the land
Cannot assuage her solitude or the tightness of the band
She’s home at last
She remembers when she met him
Temples grey and full of wisdom
Things were so different then
She never doubted him
Now through the clarity of reckoning
She sees his love as merely flattery
And his adoration as an affectation
Of his calculating and easily bruised ego
His ego, his ego
She sits alone upon a throne of deep and bitter red
The cabernet reminds her that the life she knew is dead
She looks upon the land of emperors and swords
The scenery is breathtaking but all she is is bored
She waits for him in luxury of the finest kind
He took her heart in usury; at first she didn’t mind
She sees him idling beside a pretty girl in red
At first she’d have felt hurt; now all she feels is dead
The beer is cold, the sake’s hot
The lust is there, the love is not
They stare across a room of dark-haired strangers
Like frightened children they steal a look
At the one whose vow they took
They’ll never know unless they ask
And we know they’ll never ask
They’re home at last
